Project Two: In the Woods

Spend time in the woods - it will do you good! It’s called Forest Bathing.

Hiking is one of my favorite activities and I enjoy it all year around. These paintings are about some of my favorite hikes; I often hike by myself and listen to the forest sounds, feel the sun and air in my face, and focus on where I am in the moment.

Roots 1 - Roots rise up to trip the careless hiker.

While hiking alone on the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT) in Minnesota near Cascade State Park, I was wary of the many tree roots that climb across the trail. I imaged that the roots were reaching for me, ready to claim me as a permanent resident of the forest.

While hiking one fall day I saw red leaves backlit by late afternoon sun. It was such a beautiful sight that I tried to capture the vivid red, golden sunlight and the sharp vertical lines of the trees when I painted the scene later.

While hiking at Lebanon Hills Regional Park, a hiker passed me, moving so quickly that he seemed to disappeared from view immediately like a memory.

The Birches - Birch trees in a cluster near a hiking trail.

I love birches with silvery white bark and black or dark brown “brands” on the surface of the tree.

Roots 2 - Roots rise up out of the trail to trip the unwary hiker; the trail beckons onward progress.

In this painting I saw the roots of the trees as beautiful and intricate mazes instead of tripping hazards.
